Find an Evaluator

Homeschool Evaluator Requirements in Pennsylvania (Short Overview)

Under the Pennsylvania Home Education Law, every homeschooled student in Pennsylvania must have their portfolio reviewed by a qualified evaluator at the end of each school year — including high school.

What Does the Evaluator Do?

The evaluator reviews:

  • The student’s portfolio (attendance record + samples of work)

  • A log of reading materials used

  • Overall progress in required subjects

They then write a written evaluation letter stating that an appropriate education occurred for that school year. This letter is submitted to your local school district as part of your annual paperwork.

Who Can Be an Evaluator?

In Pennsylvania, a homeschool evaluator must be one of the following:

  • A PA-certified teacher with at least two years of teaching experience

  • A licensed psychologist

  • A non-public school teacher or administrator

  • Someone else approved by the superintendent

Many families choose a certified teacher who regularly evaluates homeschoolers and understands the flexibility of home education.
